Is there a particular area that needs more help than another? I tried to dig in to things here yesterday, but I'm afraid that my lack of NASCAR knowledge and the abundance of categories had me at a loss as to where to start. If you can give me some direction, I'd love to do what I can to help out. There are two other things I can think of right off the bat: one would be to re-organize the front page so that it looks a bit more inviting to newcomers who might want to edit the wiki. And the other involves getting some input from you as to what articles could be merged to make for more inviting articles that contributors feel compelled to edit. For example, there are a lot of pages like this 1955-20 that appear to be almost exact duplicates of other articles in the same category with just a minor date change. If all the articles in that category were organized into one page, it would make for a more interesting article that visitors might want to contribute to. Hi, Tim! I'm moving this discussion back to your page, so we can all talk in one place.

I agree that the main page is missing something. I think the main thing is that the featured picture is so dominant. Your eye is drawn to the huge black box, but then it doesn't really lead you anywhere. It's hard to focus on the portals underneath.

Below that, we could make the logos link directly to the pages, rather than to the image page. That way, people could click on the picture, and go where you want them to go.

I think loading a random picture might also be making the page slower to load, which isn't great for a main page.

Would you mind if Scott and I helped you out with redesigning the page? I don't want to jump in and mess with your main page, if you'd rather do it yourself. -- Danny (talk) 15:44, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Tim -- As Nef said, you're on thirdturn.armchairgm.com now! We'll have to keep an eye out for any tech glitches that come up... This is the first wiki that we've moved to armchairgm, so there may be minor unexpected changes.

At the moment, I'm switching back and forth between Monaco and Monobook sometimes... Nef says it may be a cache issue, which will clear itself soon. I'll check back again in a little bit -- if it's still acting weird, I'll talk to Nef again, and we'll figure out what the problem is.

Anyway, let me know how it looks to you. The major stuff is fine -- any glitches that come up will be minor things that we can fix. If anything looks weird, let me know right away, and I'll make sure it gets fixed.

I'm not seeing Monobook when I hit edit, but I am seeing it other times... One problem might be that the NASCAR Wiki: namespace was moved to The Third Turn:, but the pages weren't moved over. So when you're editing those pages, something in the software is getting confused. I'll add that to the bug report that I filed.

Meanwhile, don't be afraid to keep editing, even if it still looks weird for a little bit. There's no danger to your content or your edits; just a quirky bug in the background that we need to figure out.

k, thanks. Yeah, I started noticing Monobook other places. It just did some funky things with some of the pages. But as long as you've got a bug report in for me, I appreciate it. Things will work out, so I'll keep one editing.

P.S. "Your edit has been rejected because your client mangled the punctuation characters in the edit token. The edit has been rejected to prevent corruption of the article text. This sometimes happens when you are using a buggy web-based anonymous proxy service." Please add this to the bug report. I get this a lot when trying to edit a new page.

Yuck, that's a pain. I just added a note to the bug ticket about Monobook, and also that there's weirdness with the project pages, like The Third Turn:Accomplishments.

I'll add another note about that "edit has been rejected" message. How often does that happen? Is it when you're creating a brand new page, or other times? I just created two test pages, and I didn't get that... although I did get a couple of database loss errors. Tell me as much as you can about when you get that message, and I'll pass it on. --

I dunno when I get it. It's apparently different for each computer. My page entitled the 1985 WBKR/Cook's Chevy Land 100 seems like a mess to me, but to you it's probably fine. For Accomplishments looks fine to me. I don't know when I get that message. It's coming and going. For a while, Monobook seems dominant. Now it's Monaco for the moment.

Wikia's New StyleEdit

I've been working on a new main page layout this morning. Hopefully you have read about the skin and ad changes at Wikia's New Style on Central Wikia. If not, I hope you'll have a look.

One of the changes is a block of two ads on each main page. It's possible that they won't always show up, but to ensure your main page continues to work properly when they do, you need to update your main page column formatting code with new column tags

I have drafted a main page using the new tags on here which I hope you can take a look at - feel free to edit it of course. The main change to the layout is the fixed width of the right column. This still allows a lot of customisation - for example see these main pages - w:c:muppet, w:c:wowwiki, w:c:ffxi.

If you encounter any problems with the new tags, please let me know.

Madison International SpeedwayEdit

Are you sure it held a NASCAR race? I don't see any information at racing-reference.info. I don't remember it being a NASCAR-sanctioned track, but I don't know everything. It was an ASA-sanctioned track last year. It had been know as Capitol Speedway back in the 1960s. Royalbroil 13:15, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

I believe that it did host lots of Midwest division races, probably an annual race back through the ARTGO days. Did you catch my edit and a link to the Winter Heat article that I wrote on the English Wikipedia about the tv program? re: SWT Season Central Edit

I'm glad that I'm able to contribute. I'll probably only be able to do both the NWT and SWT's up through 1995 since I'm most familiar with both series up until that point.

Main page design Edit

Hey DaNASCAT. My name is Joe and I'm with the Wikia Sports support team. I don't know if you are aware of it or not, but your current main page design is very wide. I noticed the message that Ose left on the Main page's talk page, so the problem is definitely affecting users. The most widely used screen resolution is 1024x768. I uploaded an image showing what the main page looks like to everyone using that resolution. As you can see, the entire right column is unseen, unless the user scrolls sideways. I'm sure you want the entire main page to be visible to all of your wiki's visitors and contributors, so I wanted to ask if you were open to suggestions and/or help for redesigning it. I've designed many main pages, logos, and skins, and I'd be glad to help out with this.

I guess the first thing I need to know is: how attached are you to using that many images as links to the various categories? Granted, they're a different method, but I fear that most people would be overwhelmed by it all, thus getting confused and, in extreme cases, maybe even leaving the wiki due to not being able to get to the information they want. Oh, I can also clean up that 3-shaped logo so that it looks more professional. So let me know if you'll accept my offer to help, and I'll get started on a test page. Well I had planned on getting started today, but another project that I expected to only take a little while ended up taking all day today. >_< The good news is that my bosses don't work weekends, so for the next 2 days, I'm free to work on whatever, which in this case is this wiki. I think the first thing I'll do is redesign the 3-shaped logo. I did want to ask about colors, too. The NASCAR logo has four colors of the rainbow, but your skin and main page have only black and grays. I'm just curious about why you chose this color scheme, and if you would be against implementing some color into the main page design. Anyway, sorry again for not being around today. I wanted to use black and gray to implement a chrome look, which many fans find appealing. (though that is not to say fans don't find color appealing either). I wanted to stay away from NASCAR colours to give our site a truly independent look and also NASCAR has contacted Wikia before about us getting close to infringing on some of their copyrights. I spent a few hours yesterday and a couple hours today on designing graphics and a different layout. If you haven't seen my test page yet, take a look. Using the left and right column tags (<mainpage-leftcolumn-start />) and an embedded 2-column setup (using templates) in the left column, I was able to keep the 3-column layout that the current main page has, while also keeping the chrome look and a few arrows. In case you're not familiar with those column tags, the right column is set at 300 pixels, while the left column is dynamic, so its width is determined by the user's screen resolution. Since the most used resolution is 1024 wide, I designed the test page so that everything fits on the screen with that size. Give it a test drive and post your feedback to me. Also feel free to copy the code to your own test page and tinker with it. Joe, it looks great! Just one or two things perhaps you'd be willing to look at. I originally added the Pit Crew as filler material for the front page. Perhaps you could put the Featured Video and Picture in their place and then just center the Third Turn welcome and logo by itself on the right column? (Also, adding a link to the User:daNASCAT page with the alternate text of "Contact Us" under the "Join Us" section would be great). I'm glad you like it! As requested, I replaced the Pit Crew section with the Featured Picture and Video and I added the Contact Us link. I was able to use the POD template with the picture being where it is now (it didn't work in the right column), but for the Video section, I had to put the caption underneath because with it on the side, it made the screen too wide for 1024 resolution. Of course, if you want it to be on the side (to match the POD), you could reduce the image size a bit on the POD template and maybe reduce the video width a bit, but that's up to you. I have another (different but similar) main page design for you to look at. The head of the Wikia Sports team, Danny (User:Toughpigs) suggested putting a news section at the top and adding some color. He said you don't worry about NASCAR infringment - all they wanted was the old URL changed, which was a taken care of a long time ago. As always, it's up to you to decide what to do use for a new main page design. I just wanted to show you this other alternate look. P.S. I'll look into fixing that background image. Joe, I definitely still prefer the first one, although I might incorporate the more colorful logo. I know we can use their colors, but I just didn't want to draw any suspicion while indicating our site was on its own. blank pages Edit

Uberfuzzy, I have seen absolutely no change. Which is, as you can imagine, incredibly heartbreaking. I could attribute those to three possible problems. A) Perhaps it takes a while for the caches to clear of the old SMW. B) The main fix was in the SVN patch on the upgrade. Perhaps the tech teach did not also update the SVN? C) This upgrade is simply ineffective. I will try to repair all Semantic data with my admin options, but I am unsure if that will be effective. --DaNASCAT 17:24, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Edit: I have found on SMW a new action that allows for immediate per-page refreshment. That should allow the data on each page to be quickly fixed, but b/c I do not have the permission to utilize the fix directly, i will need someone with access to the script to test a page for me. (SMW_refreshData.php) is the action. A good test page would be Brad Leighton/Results. I think they can also do (touch LocalSettings.php), but I've not really seen the parameters for what that would do (I think it would do a cache dump and rebuild all data), but I'm not too sure. --DaNASCAT 17:53, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I've checked Greg Fowler/Results. SMW is timeouting there. Try to remove any of SeasonResultForm calls. Any two of them work ok. Three SMW searches seem to be too much for php limit. (3 is not really important. It's the amount of stats you have. I bet you can have just one call blanking a page - long as you #ask for too much data.)

I don't know what is the right solution for this problem. Streamlined SMW templates? More caching? (Driver/Results including Driver/Results/Foo page which contains SMW call?) With so much stats... maybe pure MW extension? It's not semantics what's going on here. It's hardcore data mining. (-;

Well, understandly, I'm kinda stuck here. I tried a few things last night that might reduce the stress on each page. However, that in the end could not work. Semantic pages seem to freeze after 14-15 results are inserted into the page, not necessarily dependent on how many times the template is used. I will be trying more things, but I might have to end up typing many things in manually. Which is fairly frustrating. Let me know if you find any MW Extension you think could help. Template:NASCAR current driver Edit

I'm really impressed with how much you (mainly you alone) have been able to develop with the Third Turn! Every time I search for a more obscure NASCAR driver or event, I find it here! Good job! I'm working on Scott Gaylord right now. Very soon, there will be a lot of content on him coming up on the English Wikipedia. I was just planning to write the article since he's not very well known in NASCAR, but I see that he's competed in the 24 hours of Daytona and won several SCCA championships. I found a very quirky fact about him, so I think I'll nominate it for Did You Know. Did You Know... that he asked his wife for their first date while competing against her in a race? I couldn't make up something that good! I've been an admin on the English Wikipedia since Nov. 2007 and I'm currently running for admin on Wikimedia Commons (but please don't go there to vote because I'm not canvasing for support). I filled in the gaps you asked for regarding the 1988 Winston 150 and the 1986 Outside pole qualifier. With regards to the 1987 7-UP 151, I'm showing Rick Fuller finishing 24th and Ron Shephard not at the event. Can't confirm that 100% but I'm pretty certain that Shephard was not there.

Hello Again Tim,

Your right about my wiki skills, pretty poor. I just noticed on the 1988 Winston 150 at Rougemont that you have 42 drivers in that race. My records are showing that 26 cars stared the race with Wayne Anderson finishing last. All of the drivers from 27th on down were non-qualifiers, although the order you have them in is correct as to how they time trialed.

 After researching a little bit, discovered that in the 1988 Icebreaker (race #3), positions 33-40 (Dan Avery-Joe Mammolito) were Non-Qualifiers for that event.

  I know what you mean about that Driver, I don't know who he is either, but I have his name written down in my records (more than once in DNQ's) Can't remember what the source was at the time back then. I'll look into it further though when I get a chance. This is pretty cool stuff, but I'm sure you can attest that it can be more than a tad frustrating at times.

   Burning the midnight oil here in NJ. Sorry to say, I don't have results for any of the races you were looking for. Pretty sure I have DNQ lists for 1999 though, I'll check into that. Also, I was looking through 1988 finishes and noticed that my records show Tim Connolly finishing 31st in the Winston 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park (1988). I checked with NASCAR points and it shows that Connolly had 5 starts that year; the 31st place finish at Indy would give him the five starts. I was going to add him but figured I let you check into it first. Thanks again for all your hard work.

Hi Tim:

 Here's a mystery for you, My records show Tom Bolles finishing 22nd in the Giant Eagle snacks 150 at Jennerstown in 1990. I have him as staring 12th in the race. If you notice on the race results page, no one else stared 12th and John Hoffman is listed as starting 22nd. Here's my conundrum, NASCAR points show Bolles starting 20 races that year and garnering 2426 points, meaning Bolles did not start the race or was there and got no points. (maybe a DQ of some kind). If Bolles was at the race, finished 22nd (97 points) his final tally would have been 2523.

 Just a head's up, in 2003 the mod tour had an 18 race season, from what I see on the site the 13th race of the year, the "American Sleeve Bearing American Classic 150" at Stafford Springs is not shown. I have the feature run down along with starting positions, Non-Qualifiers and Pole Winner. If you don't have this info, I'll be glad to enter it if you can set up the template, (I still stink at this Wiki stuff)

Nationwide drivers images Edit

I might as well won the lottery! One of my pictures ranks real high on google images and a big-time NASCAR sponsor gave me garage & pit passes for the Milwaukee Mile race last weekend! I was hanging with the drivers during introductions and I was able to get pictures of VERY MANY drivers! I posted them on my flickr account starting here. I would greatly appreciate knowing who these drivers are so that I can upload them to Wikipedia. I don't mind if you want to share the love and upload them here as well, as long as you use Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.0 licensing. I could make up the template for CC-by-SA-2.0. Header images Edit

Hi daNASCAT!

We're glad you're so enthusiastic about this wiki, and have been having so much fun working on the design. However, we'd like to encourage you to ask you not to expand the size of the header so much. For the majority of our users, such a huge header can push the content of the pages completely below the fold, requiring them to scroll to see it. Since numerous other things (sitenotice, new messages bar, multiple toolbars in their browser) may push the page down even further, they may not even see the page title. We know from experience that search engine visitors who don't immediately see what they're looking for will click out of a page without hunting or scrolling, so over time this could do a lot of damage to your wiki, especially compared to the so-so value of a striking graphic that most visitors will be tuning out and ignoring after their first page-view or two.

We encourage you to check out what other wikis are doing -- Star Wars at http://starwars.wikia.com in particular has done some nice things without reducing page size. Others have also created some striking effects with banners the same size as the logo space: see http://lostpedia.wikia.com and http://dcau.wikia.com and http://avatar.wikia.com for some ideas.

Hey, can you change the link part of the Jimmy Ingram page I just added? It wasn't Sprint Cup. In 1980, the Winston Cup Grand National series was the big race on Sunday. I know the Series names have changed since then, and I don't keep up any more - but I'd like this to be right. Jimmy Ingram was my dad; he passed away 11 years ago, but that Dover race was one of the happiest moments of his life - mine, too - and I like the idea of his little bit of fame being recorded forever and correctly. USAC drivers Edit

I was researching Norm Nelson for a new article on the English Wikipedia and I came across his article here. His article here doesn't make sense, and the big gap is because he was a USAC Stock Car driver and champion in 1960, 1965, and 1966!

Other drivers with this problem include Butch Hartman [1] and Ramo Stott. I urge you to check our their Wikipedia articles.

SMW as applied by Wikia Edit

Hello again, Tim.

I hope SMW is working satisfactorily here. Familypedia is still suffering from recent version changes, though our main input forms have been restored to a workable but less than ideal state.

Recently I have wondered whether we should have a Wikia site devoted to the use of SMW on Wikia. It could be unfair on outside sites such as Referata to start forums there just for Wikia problems, and Community Central forums tend to be so numerous (and so soon archived) that they would not be adequate help to SMW users for airing their problems and giving permanently-readable solutions.
