Thompson's debut came in 1951, when he competed at Columbia. Starting positions in the field of twenty-nine are unknown, but Thompson drove well in the race and finished 14th. Unforunately, he was unable to improve upon that at Macon, crashing to 20th.
Thompson's final three races came in 1952, when he started the year off at Palm Beach. It was a rough start for Thompson, finishing 27th at Palm Beach and then struggling to 54th at Daytona Beach. But Thompson pulled a decent finish out of the event at Jacksonville, finishing 18th in his career finale.
