[edit] 2005
Gilliland announced that Clay Andrews Racing would form in mid-2005, met with much skepticism about how good the team could compete in the tough Busch Series. However, during 2005, Gilliland had some chances to prove his talent.
Gilliland made his Busch Series debut at Phoenix, qualifying 28th. However, he was involved with an early crash and finished last-43rd. Gilliland made the other Phoenix race later in the year, but had the same result. He was 43rd after ignition troubles. Also, he ran the #15 Billy Ballew Motorsports Chevy at Vegas in the Craftsman Truck Series with a 22nd place finish.
[edit] 2006
Gilliland then began running the #84 Clay Andrews Chevy part-time in 2006, and has impressed many people, drawing praise from many veterans, even announcer Darrell Waltrip. Gilliland has often been in competition with the leaders, and he even qualified 4th at Kentucky. However, the finishes have not been reflective of that, but Gilliland clearly has a bright future. As mentioned, Gilliland will attempt to make his first Cup race at Sonoma.
[edit] 2007
In the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup racing season, David Gilliland is going for the Rookie of the Year title. In his first Cup start ever, at Daytona, in the Bud Shootout, David raced hard and finished in the top 5. David followed that up the next day by sitting on the pole for the Daytona 500. Him, along with his teammate in the #88 machine, are on the front row, giving Robert Yates Racing a good chance at winning the 500.
