Kauf's debut came in 1971, when he competed at Riverside. Starting 24th in the field of forty, Kauf fell victim to an early transmission issue and finished a disappointing 27th. But it turned out to be a better finish than he would receive in the June race, finishing 37th after his engine expired on the ninth lap.
Kauf's next race came in 1972, when he made his first trip to Ontario. Starting 38th in the field of fifty-one, Kauf was in route to a solid finish until his engine exploded late, leaving him 29th. He also tried unsuccessfully to garner a good finish at Riverside, finishing 39th after a fifth lap oil line issue.
Kauf's final career race came in 1973, when he competed at Riverside. It was another abismal race for Kauf at the track, finishing 37th among forty cars thanks to an early ignition issue.
