The Race::1992 Skoal Copper World Classic was a Featherlite Southwest Tour event held at Track::Phoenix International Raceway on February 2, 1992. It was the season opener. Northwest Tour driver Tobey Butler invaded the race and stole the show, grabbing his first series victory by holding off Rick Carelli. Eventual season champ Ron Hornaday, Jr. was third with Dan Press and Dirk Stephens rounding out the top-five. A.J. Foyt, running his first series race, finished 6th after starting 44th. Doug George was 7th and Ray Lawson, Jr. was 12th.23 of the 44 cars were running at the finish, many falling out of accidents that caused seven cautions. More drivers attempted to qualify, but with only a 44-car field quite a few were sent home. The only driver we can confirm as a non-qualifier was Dennis Griggs . This event was broadcast on TNN's American Sports Cavalcade.
