The 1988 Winston 100 (SWT) was a Southwest Tour event held at Infineon Raceway on April 23, 1988. Jon Paques rolled away to victory, the first of his career. An engine failure on Roman Calczynski's machine allowed Troy Beebe to close in on the points lead.
[edit] Race Review
Jon Paques executed a daring pass with eight laps to go and drove his
Chevrolet Camaro to a five-second victory in the Winston 100 NASCAR stock car race Saturday at Sears Point International Raceway.
Paques, 20, of Albuquerque, scored his first victory on the NASCAR
Southwest Tour circuit for All-American Challenge Series stock cars, beating
Roy Smith of Victoria, British Columbia, a three-time NASCAR Winston West
Series champion.
The winning pass came at the beginning of the 18th lap, when Paques
passed pole-starter Ken Pedersen of Sausalito, Calif., entering the first turn of the 2.52-mile road course. Pedersen, leader of the first 17 laps, finished fifth as his Pontiac TransAm ran out of gas on the final circuit.
Smith`s Ford edged the Camaro of Troy Beebe of Modesto, Calif., winner of an earlier Southwest Tour event in El Cajon, Calif. Duke Hoenshell of Orange, Calif., was fourth in another Camaro, followed by Pedersen. All completed the 25-lap distance.
Paques` winning average speed was 68.499 m.p.h., slowed by three caution
periods for six laps. He won $3,500 from a purse of $23,000.
Roman Calczynski of Sepulveda, Calif., maintained the Southwest Tour
championship lead after four of 20 races despite his Camaro dropping out on
the fourth lap with engine failure. Calczynski, Beebe and 10th-place finisher Ray Hooper Jr. of Palmdale, Calif., are separated by only eight points in the point standings.
