1985 Winston Modified Tour Central

The 1985 Winston Modified Tour season (currently known as the Whelen Modified Tour) was a NASCAR touring season held from March 31, 1985 to October 27, 1985. It was the first season of the modern era for the division. Richie Evans won twelve races in route to his eighth straight series championship (including the pre-1985 era), but was tragically killed while practicing for the season finale. Ten different drivers won during the 29-race schedule.

| Early 1985: NASCAR announces it will revise and revamp the Modified Tour. Sponsorship will come from Winston. The schedule is set.
March 31, 1985: Richie Evans wins the first official race of the revamped series, holding off Jeff Fuller in the annual Icebreaker. August 1, 1985: Evans wins his fifth straight race, which is still tied for a series record. Two races were held that day with Evans winning the first Twin event to keep his record going and then Jeff Fuller snapping the record in the second twin. September 21, 1985: Mike McLaughlin crashes to 24th in the Tioga event, all but assuring Richie Evans the 1985 championship. October 27, 1985: Richie Evans is tragically killed in a practice accident while preparing for the season finale. John Bryant won his only series race while Evans still won the championship, his eighth straight. Cars would run the #61 decal (Evan's number) on the B-Post of their cars for the 1986 season |
